Out Of Their Own Mouths
18 May 2008 They said it! Mr Radical will attempt to hold the fort while Mr Right is away. I can't match his eloquence, but I thought I would share a couple of media quotes that caught my eye this week. The first is from Miss Alice Faye Eichelberger. 'Who?' I almost hear you ask. Okay, maybe she's not a celebrity in her own right but she is the wife - soon to be ex-wife - of media celebrity John Cleese. (These Hollywood divorces are so enlightening.) It is reported that she admited to the court she hadn't worked in years but is entitled to her settlement because, as the wife of a 'world renowned celebrity', she had gotten used to being 'entertained by royalty and dignitaries in castles'! What a turn about! I can remember when it was the lot of entertainers and celebrities to entertain royalty and dignitaries. But not any more it seems! As an aside: her lawyers told the court, right now she has no money. In a word, penny-less. So she's forced to put up at the New York Carlyle Hotel at $1,185 a night. (I must remember that one.) To meet her demands, Cleese has been forced to sell his 'prized Santa Barabara ranch' for $16m. (Sold to another media celebrity, I wonder?) Source: Daily Mail My second quote comes from the blog of the BBC's Justin Webb, the corporation's 'expert' on North America and the US elections. The BBC are fully behind the official media line of supporting Obama just now. In his entry 'bypassing West Virginia' Mr Webb dismisses the significance of Hilary's win. He writes: 'With respect to West Virginia, this ... ABC exit poll was pretty devastating I thought: "Ninety-five percent of voters in preliminary exit poll results were whites, just under a third were college graduates - among the fewest in any primary this year - and 55 percent had household incomes under $50,000, among the most in primaries to date." Now none of that suggests that these people's views should not count, but they are not on the cutting edge of America's future nor of the Democratic party's future.' So here it is in black-and-white, the BBC's expert has decided that white people with jobs, and earning the median wage or under, are not the future for America. 'Now none of that suggests that these people's views should not count' - except, of course, that is precisely what he is suggesting. Where exactly does he think the future lies? 'Eggheads, African-Americans and suburbanites would be a perfect coalition and a winning one.' So now we know. There is something else I will point up on Mr Webb's BBC Blog. Whites are always 'white' but blacks are 'African-Americans'. It seems a small difference but it is significant and you should question why. Professional journalists get paid to ponder every expression and every last word. It is only when you appreciate their wiles will you see them for what they are. So now you know. |
